MEET THE FILMMAKER

After graduating from Vancouver film School in 1991, I took a three day hike around Salt Spring Island . It was there, that I met a black women; in her late seventies who was born and raised on Salt Spring Island . Curious, she asked me who my relations where on the Island . And after explaining to her that I had no history on the Island, she educated me on Saltspring Island and its founding pioneers.

And I couldn’t help think what a wonderful story this is; a hidden piece of British Columbia ’s history that needed to be told about this black exodus from San Francisco California to the British colony of Vancouver Island in 1858.

As a born and raised British Columbian, and a product of the public school system, I personally would have loved to have learned about the first black immigrants who came to the British Colony right before the America Civil war. On a personal note. this historical documentary  has filled a void in my life in knowing that my own people made a contribution in the development to the Province of British Columbia. Nevertheless, the title is a reminder to do what is important in life…Go Do Some Great Thing.
